The purpose of this study was to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the departments of leisure and recreation in universities. The contents were the evaluative documents of the departments of leisure and recreation from 2006 to 2008, including 15 departments. The research method was content analysis which contained five factors, including the purpose, characteristics, and self-improvement, program design and teaching, student learning and counseling, and performance achievement of teachers and department graduates. The results were the following: (a) the departments which did not pass the accreditation had weaknesses, such as the purpose of the department was not clear and the guidelines for self-improvement were not developed. In addition, the programs of the department, the quantities and performances of teachers, and student learning and counseling, were not adequate. Furthermore, those departments didn’t have a clear system for department graduates to be contacted for follow-up. (b) Those departments which passed the accreditation had better performance on the purpose, self-improvement, and student counseling, and they needed to change some questions on the program design, quantities and performances of teachers, and the way for contacting with department graduates. It is advised that the indicators can provide suggestions to the departments of leisure and recreation for continuous-improvement. |
