By taking linguistic conflicts in Hou Hsiao-hsien's movie, 'A City of Sadness', as a point of departure, this paper discusses Taiwan's linguistic scenes in relation to the island's socio-political contexts. It utilizes the concept of linguicism and the differentiation/assimilation forces of language to examine interactions between language policies and language preferences. The paper argues that no single politically enforced national language can overpower the inherent linguistic diversity of the island even though general linguistic preferences seem to be under the strong influence of dominant cultures or authorities.本文以候孝賢導演在電影《悲情城市》中所呈現的語言衝突為起點,探討台灣社會與政治脈絡下的語言景象,並以語言歧視主義中所強調的語言同化及區別力來審視台灣的語言政策與語言喜好。本文主張:雖然社會整體所呈現的語言喜好表徵看來似乎會受到主流文化或官方政策的強烈影響,但台灣在政策上強制施行的國家語言並無法壓倒源於社會內在所具有的語言多樣性。 |
