In Taiwan, the importance of a person's reading competence has pedagogically captured islandwide attention over the last decade. Reading competence is also globally regarded as one of the interdisciplinary requirements in our high-tech society. However, the traditional approaches, teacher-oriented and/or text-oriented approaches have long been questioned. In the Western world, many researchers and instructors pointed out that Louise Rosenblatt's Transactional Theory which encouraged the transaction between the reader and the text, offered effective ways in helping students to become active readers. Here in Taiwan, Rosenblatt's Transactional Theory is relatively novel to many EFL teachers and researchers, not to mention its application to classroom instruction. This emerging insight has inevitably led to the advent of changing the ways of English reading teaching in this era. |
