To implement hospice and palliative care, long-term care systems need to be adjusted to related social policies, institutional environments, and resident characteristics. It is important to assess the need of each resident based on values of good death to take care the whole person and their families with the continuing services provided from multiple-professional teams. It is also crucial to coordinate internal and external hospice and palliative care resources in long-term care institutions in order to provide appropriate psychosocial services and reach the goal of good death in home-like institutions where the residents live. The purpose of the article was to explore related issues through the proposed long-term care institutions in the provision of hospice services. We hope every resident has the opportunity to have a better understanding of palliative care in his/her dying stage, express his/her living will, and make a meaningful decision for himself/herself. |
