Given the huge size of its population and the rapid growth of its economy, mainland China’s demand for medical services will surely continue increasing. Moreover, the reform of the medical system recently carried out by the country’s governing authorities will give a further boost to the future development of its medical care market. This study carries out a preliminary survey on the prospects for Taiwanese investment in mainland China’s medical service industry, and makes the following key findings: 1. Over the next three years (2009 to 2011), spending on medical services in mainland China will double from its 2008 level to an estimated 1.645 trillion renminbi, presenting substantial commercial opportunities to the medical industry. 2. Mainland China’s public hospitals not only earn profit from medical insurance, but also can receive government subsidies, and hold a dominant 96% share of the country’s medical services market. Foreign-invested hospitals face substantial operating hurdles, including difficulty in obtaining medical insurance and uncertainty in respect of medical personnel. Hence, investment in mainland China’s medical services industry still potentially involves high risk. Though the country’s medical services market presents a large and appetizing feast of commercial opportunity, that feast may be just for the seeing but not for the eating by foreign investors. |
