Since 1995, Taiwan’s trade with mainland China has seen major changes alongside significant developments in the cross-strait economic and political environment. The composition of bilateral commodity trade has shifted to capital-intensive and technology-intensive goods, such as those produced by the electronics and information industries. Moreover, expanding intra-industry trade between the two sides suggests that cross-strait division of labor and interdependence is growing. This paper discusses whether Taiwan’s export competitiveness in the U.S. and Japanese markets is affected by the changes in the cross-strait trade structure. |
