Its principle indications are mainly for stroke-induced paraplegia, twisted eyes and mouth, inability to speak, involuntary salivation, dry feces, polyuria, and dripping urea. All the components including 150 gm of Hwang-Chi, 7.5 gm of Tau-Jen, 5.6 gm of Chwang-Chone, 7.5 gm of Guai-Wei, 7.5 gm of Chi-Shou, 7.5 gm of Di-Long-Gan and 1.775 gm of Cang-Hon-Hwa are extracted via distillation and concen-trated to obtain crude extracts for subsequent pharmacological experiments. The results are as described:A. Administration of 5 gm/kg Pou Yan Fan Wu Tan twice perday can significantly reduce total cholesterol and triglycerideslevels without changing HDL levels in normal rats. B. Induction of hyperlipidemia in rats. 1. Rats with one, three or four weeks of hyperlipidemia induction with subsequent administration of 5 gm/kg Pou Yan Fan Wu Tantwice perday for one week showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol and triglycerides levels as compared to controls. 3. Rats with one, three or four weeks of hyperlipidemia induction with subsequent administration of 5gm/kg Pou Yan Fan Wu Tan twice perday for one week showed no change in HDL level as compared to controls. In summary, our results showed that Pou Yan Fan Wu Tan with our special prescription can effectively reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides levels without altering HDL level in either hyperlipidemia or normal rats. |
