On the basis of the Chinese medical theory of that 'blood and essence are of the same source and blood can transform into essence', we selected three well-known Huo Xue Yu (blood-quickening stasis transforming) formulas originating from the Yi Lin Gai Guo ('Correction of Medical Errors') by Wang Qing Ren in the Qing Dynasty, in order to observe their effect on normal sperm motility in vitro. We analyzed 16 semen samles using the computer-assisted semen analyzer. We divided samples into an experimental group and a control group. In the experimental group, three solutions of XueFuZhu Yu Tang, GeXiaZhuYu Tang, and Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang formulas, at three different concentrations of 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01 mg/mL. The control group contained semen samples without the addition of any herbs, and semen samples with addition of F-10 solution. The results show that the essence-strengthening effect of three formulas on low sperm motility in vitro is markedly significant for a duration of 120 minutes. These formula solutions promoted normal progressive sperm motility including straightness and path velocity (VAP). In conclusion the action of these formulas in increasing sperm motility and forward progression may be further study on reproductive technology. |
