In this study, we investigated the effects of Cistanche deserticola Ma. (abbreviated as CD) on spontaneous motor activity by using an automated activity meter in rats. It was found that crude extract of CD reduced horizontal activity. The water fraction of CD extract (Fr Ⅲ) reduced the horizontal activity more than other fractions of CD extract in rats. Fr Ⅲ enhanced the decrease in the horizontal activity produced by α-methyl-p-tyrosine, 5-hydroxytryptophan and muscimol, reduced the increase in the horizontal activity produced by l-dopa plus benserazide. p-chlorophcnylalanine, and bicuculline. Furthermore Fr Ⅲ did not augment the hypomotility produced by baclofen. These results suggest that the hypomotility produced by Fr Ⅲ may be due to the decrease in the dopaminergic activity and the increase in the serotoncreic and GABA(subscript A) crgic activities. |
