Tea brewed from the fallen leaves of T. catappa L. which has many hydrolyzable tannins is used as folk medicine to treat liver disorder in Taiwan. An HPLC method was used to examine the contents of punicalin and punicalagin from samples of fresh leaf, dried leaf, and dried fallen leaf of T. catappa L. Leaves were twice boiled in water over a period of 10 min. prior to HPLC analysis. The extraction rate was 5.9%, 9.6% and 9.8% for fresh leaf, dried leaf and dried fallen leaf, respectively. The results showed that the amount of punicalin and punicalagin in the samples assessed were: 0.046%; 0.0044% (fresh leaf), 0.15%; 0.027% (dried leaf), and 0.029%; 0.0013% (dried fallen leaf). |
