Abnormalities of semen account for 70-80% of all important cases, and low sperm mobility is a common cause according to tradional Chinese Medicinal theories, patients suffering from low sperm mobility are found mostly to be suffering from kidney or spleen vacuity. In this study, we investigated the effects of ”spleen-fortifying formuals” that ”dry dampness, digest phlegm, and clear heat,” including Liu Jun Zi Tang, Gang Sha Dao Tan Tang and Er Miao San on sperm mobility in vitro. Semen samples from 21 normal patients with sperm motility over 50% or above, and 30 abnormal patients with sperm motility of less than 50% were used. The sperm count in both groups was over 20×10^6, in accordance with World Health Organizations standards. Sperm samples taken from the normal and abnormal control groups were treated with Chinese medical formulas and and F-10 solution respectively. 3 concentrations of 1.0, 0.1 and 0.002 mg/ml respectively were used. At 60 and 120 minutes intervals, 10 μl was removed and placed in a MAKLER counter chamber, and the sperm motility was calculated by computer-assisted analysis (HTM-2030). The results showed that the three formulas markedly stimulated both ”sperm motility” amid ”progressive sperm motility” at 60 minutes and 120 minutes in the abnormal group. The mechanism of this effect requires further investigation. |
