Families and patients face rapid changes in the condition of patients in intensive care units. Coupled with a lack of understanding of the complex equipment and treatment procedures, and an unfamiliar environment, they are prone to stress and discomfort. The purpose of this project was to improve ICU nurse performance with regard to integrity of admission orientation, and to assist families with sufficient information and guidance. Before this project, nurses’ instruction integrity scores were 41.5%, while awareness of family members after receiving guidance was only 54.7%. There are currently no suitable educational materials or an established auditing system, resulting in a lack of education and training. The production of illustrated brochures for audit approaches that enhance integrity, gave nurses continuing education, and created admission nursing orientation procedures altered results with an improvement rate of 100%. Awareness of family members after receiving guidance improved to 94.1%. Complete admission nursing orientation allows family members earlier familiarity with the ICU environment, and reduces their anxiety and nervousness. |
