Some studies suggest that the Malaysian Chinese, based on the idea of 'saving nation and strengthening native organisations,' support Chinese language education. Others argue that the purpose of Chinese merchants is to promote their own social status and business interests. Both of the above viewpoints provide some insights to the emergence and development of the Chinese language schools there. However, I suggest that the idea of philanthropy also plays an important role in the establishment and management of the Chinese language schools in Malaysia. |
