方豪與陳垣之「私淑」情誼－－一位自學史家成長的關鍵歷程

Learning Informally From Chen Yuan:The Key Process in Fang Hao's Self-Educating Efforts to be a Historian

方豪（1910-1980）係天主教修道院出身之神職人員，其後以歷史學者成名，係自學成功之史家。方氏走上歷史研究之路，固與其一己之興趣、毅力有關，然能得到前輩史家之指引、提攜亦為關鍵因素。其自學過程中，在諸多曾經鼓勵、幫助、提攜之前輩學者中「影響最多亦最深」的當推廣東新會陳援菴先生。文中探索方氏自民國十五年就讀修院時期，甘冒禁令向陳垣索書、求教，及晉鐸後持續切磋、請益，直至民國三十五年，二人歷經二十年之書信往來，始得見面於北京之歷程。來台後方氏對陳垣之追懷亦為本文關注焦點，以明方豪「私淑」陳垣，二人師生情誼之全貌。

Fang Hao, a clergyman first trained in a Catholic monastery, later became a well-known historian. His turning to and succeeding in the study of history was naturally because of his keen interest and determination. But the guidance and helps provided by his predecessors also had played an important role. Among those who helped and encouraged him, Chen Yuan of Xin-hui of Guangdong was undoubtedly the 'most influential and important' one. This paper, based mainly on the evidence drawn from letters exchanged between them and preserved intact until today, tries to trace the development of the informal discipline-tutor relationship between Fang Hao and Chen Yuan. During the twenty years from 1926 when Fang was still a monastery student until 1946 when they finally met in Beijing, Fang had kept asking Chen even against prohibition for books and guidance and advice on studying history. Even after Fang came to Taiwan, Chen still remained to be the center of his concerns. Fang indeed regarded Chen as his private teacher.
