Sustainable development indicators are one of the important tools to assess whether a city moves toward Sustainable Development (SD) or not. After taking into account the uniqueness of Taipei City, discussions with professionals, researchers and public sectors, and relevant studies, this study reviews the 48 indicators of Strategic Plan for SD of Taipei City in 2004, and then chooses 51 SD indicators fitting in the SD characteristic of Taipei City. These indicators should be regarded as a basis to assess SD of Taipei City. The 51 indicators are categorized into economic, social, environmental, and institutional dimensions. In addition, this study adopts statistical data to calculate the SD trend from 1995 to 2004. Furthermore, SD index are evaluated for the four dimensions and for Taipei City all together. Results show that indicators in the social dimensions move toward SD, while economic, environmental and institutional dimensions perform comparatively meager. However, since 2002, the economic SD index has steadily progressed toward SD. As to Taipei Sustainable Development Index, the trend demonstrates that, during the past 10 years, Taipei has gradually moved toward sustainable development. |
