In the study the foundation construction of Taiwan’s brick buildings built during the Japanese colonial period are discussed, based on an analysis of building foundations, and investigation of documentary records and decrees. The results reveal that most of the design methods for brick buildings and the foundation construction suggest that had certain rules were already being implemented during the Japanese colonial period. Part of the foundation design rules incorporated western masonry design experiences, whereas other design rules evolved by the development of material and related structural theories. The foundation construction of brick buildings built in different time showed differences in techniques. The results also show that the foundation construction of Taiwan’s brick buildings built during the Japanese colonial period was more conservative than the design rules. Since most structural materials in these buildings are degraded, the foundations should be repaired and retrofitted carefully before reusing old brick buildings. |
