The Kuomintang, KMT, advocates ultimate unification across the Taiwan Strait. Since Ma Ying-jeou won the presidential elections in 2008, he has actively opened up and boosted cross-strait exchanges, as fitting the medium stage of the National Unification Guidelines. Ma's policy is in accordance with former Chinese President Hu Jin -tao's six-point opinions. Currently, both KMT and Chinese Communist Party share the same strategic goal, i.e., “anti-independence rather than promoting reunification.” Nevertheless, it is clear that Ma always tilts towards China first, and then, moves back to a pro-US position. Diplomatically, Ma advocates the truce strategy, avoiding any confrontation against China. Domestically, the KMT makes use of the DPP's independence stance and monopolizes Beijing's preferential policy towards Taiwan. Beijing complains about Ma's slow pace of the unification process. Honorary Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung actively helped Ma clarify his political stance and make up his relationship with Chinese counterparts, and then skillfully drew KMT's position back to “One China with different interpretations.” The political behavior of the Chinese leaders is full of repetitiveness. Chinese leaders always stick to the principle but very flexible in the practice. The KMT fully takes advantage of their dispositions. Ma has not dared to touch the political deep-watered areas so far because the consequences are difficult to predict. However, he will do that when the timing is ripe. |
