Singapore, gained independence in 1965, is a multiethnic democratic country that has about 40% of residents who are foreigners. Among all Singapore's population, roughly about 74% of residents are of Chinese, 14% of Malay, 9% of Indians, while Eurasians and other ethnic groups form about 3%. The main purpose of this paper is to explore how Singapore manages its ethnic cleavages while enjoying its cultural diversity. Multicultural practices that ensure equal treatment and respect of all ethnic groups are identified as key factors to Singapore's harmonious ethnic politics. Important multicultural policies, such as language policy, housing policy, and indigenous policy, are explored and discussed. |
