For the brick wall of historic masonry building, slime mortar or low percentage cement mortar is often used. Due to its low-strength characteristics, adopting the method developed for wall constructed with general cement mortar to evaluate the resistant capacity under lateral loading, the wall strength will be overestimated and the corresponding failure path may be unreasonable. In this study, nine brick wall specimens were manufactured and tested under diagonal compressive load. The slime mortar is adding with various cement ratios. According to the failure path observed from the experiment, a procedure for evaluating the ultimate strength of URM walls is developed in this study. The relative strength between brick and mortar and the characteristics of low strength of mortar has been considered in the development of potential failure path. The comparison of evaluation and experiment shows the average differential value of ultimate wall strength is lower than 5%. Comparing to the method for cement mortar, this method will obtain more reasonable wall strength evaluation for brick wall using low strength mortar. |
