Sports facilities are central to the sport industry. Many different types of facility come under the overall category of 'sports facility.' These facilities have multiple uses as well as diversified operations, naming rights, residence of sports professionals, and spillover effects on urban transformation. Within the category of sports facilities, the sports center plays a unique role, providing a venue for people to participate in many different types of sport. Sports facilities cover a broad range of venues; however, the sports center is central to all of these facilities. Currently, new sports venues in Taiwan tend to be multi-purpose, large-scale indoor facilities. However, despite the excessive use of the term 'arena' in Taiwan, many of these sports centers are not actually on the scale of arenas elsewhere. Therefore, future planning of sports centers should focus on multi-purpose use, diversified operations, optimal use of operational periods, recruitment of outstanding management teams, and improvements in service sector competitiveness. In addition, when building such facilities, there should be a clear understanding of their objectives and functions, awareness of any design issues, and a full assessment of operational issues. This paper helps clarify the meaning and significance of sports centers, and highlights the importance of operational and investment performance when faced with increasing constraints on the provision of government resources, ensuring that the expected benefits from such facilities fully materialize. It is also hoped that this paper will provide a useful reference for the overall development of the sports industry. |
