This paper attempts to rethink our understanding of fundamental Chinese kinship concepts and relationships insofar as they impinge upon the nature and operation of various kinds of kin groups, notably family, household and lineage. The 'native's point of view' is taken in a Geertzian sense; it is not necessarily a model contructed by natives but one based on a cultural-symbolic understanding of native concepts. In concrete terms, I focus on tsung, chia and ch'in as distinct symbolic locuses of meaning. |
