In central Taiwan, many residents talk about the cultural differences between Chang-chou people and Chuan-chou people. In this article, the longterm confrontation and tension in the past is proposed to explain such oral expressions of cultural differentiation between these two groups of same historical and cultural originality, differentiated only in their dialects. All the cultural differences between these two groups are interestingly confined to those persons, things, and events associated with religious rituals of folk belief. Field data concerning with the cutting line of their residence, the local recollection of the fights happened in the past, as well as the folk legends and stories related to the fights are also provided. It then comes to the thematic discussion that there exists a dialectical relation between culture and history. The history can explain culture in the same while the culture serves to preserve the historical ethnic relation. |
