Twenty-odd representative ethnological or ethnographical monographs about Taiwan aborigines published by Japanese scholars are listed in Table I, and in Table II the time span of each author's academic work is shown. In the incipient stage of Japanese domination, anthropological investigations of Taiwan aborigines were mainly conducted by the members of the Anthropological Society of Tokyo, under the auspices of the Department of Anthropology, Tokyo University. They adopted the broad-sense anthropological method-ranging from physical measurement to linguistic research—and their field reports usually appeared in the Journal of the Society. The Special Commission for Inquiry on the Olden Customs of Taiwan was founded in 1901. In the years 1909-1919 the Commission made survey concerning the aboriginal customs. Sixteen volumes of Survey Reports were published (1913-1921), together with eight volumes of Studies based on them. |
