The subjects studied were 38 Amis who lived in Silentmoon, Chang-ping county, Taitung Hsien, Taiwan. The instrument used in this study is a revised form of Rosenzweig's P-F Test. The scoring method is adopted according to the procedures established by Rosenzweig and others. The results reveal that the older males of the Ami have more need-persistence than the older females do. Older people show more extrapunitive reactions than do the youngsters. For young people of both sexes, there is no difference in reactions. Compared with the rural Amis, the urban Amis had more responses of ego-defensiveness and fewer of intropunitiveness. These differences can be explained by reference to mechanisms in traditional Amis culture. In comparison with the Chinese university students, the Amis youngers have higher reactions to impunitiveness and obstacle-dominance. The Chinese subjects respond more with intropunitive reactions and ego-defense. These can be supported by the traditional philosophy and by observation of the normal overt behavior of people in both cultures. |
