甲骨文的發現距今只有六十多年的歷史，然而所出土的甲骨估計已不下於十萬片。這些大量的記錄殷代王室的直接史料，經過多數學者的努力鑽研，在這短短的幾十年內已將甲骨學由零星的文字考釋發展到了全部史料的整理，如斷代區分、殷曆譜的建立、殷禮週祭制度的確立等等，其進步之快，確實驚人。

The posthumous names of the Shang kings，characterized by the adoption of the ten Heavenly Stems，are traditionally interpreted as being derived from the date of birth，of death，of seniority among siblings or in succession to the throne，or by divination.
