ANCESTRAL TABLET AND GENITAL SYMBOLISM IN ANCIENT CHINA

本文是作者在本刊第七期發表的中國祖廟之起源一文的續篇。我們在前文廟義一節裏曾引許氏說文云：”祖，始廟也，從示且聲”。又劉熙釋名說：”廟，貌也，先祖形貌所在也”。照上引漢儒的解釋，始廟所＊的為”且”，前文已研究過，中國古代祖與社是同源的，所以有”古者神鬼所在謂之廟”的說法，而且這中國語的”廟”字，和玻利尼西安語的廟，土語叫做me’ae相同，後者亦是包括二者。
