It is increasingly acknowledged that the theory of environmental justice suffers from a severe limitation: it does not take economic approaches into account. Research across various contexts has demonstrated environmental justice theorists' ambivalence towards economics. Despite the fact that a mounting number of theorists recognize that economics can provide a significant contribution to the theory, there have been very few attempts to synthesize the work already achieved and to pose future research questions. In response, the goal of this paper is to present a coherent framework within which we review the major contributions of environmental economics to environmental justice. We advocate that economic approaches have played a major role in the achievement of environmental justice; and will continue to do so. What we urgently need, we argue, is to find an appropriate link between environmental justice and economics. |
