Objective: An intelligent system for monitoring/measuring, alerting, and real-time transmission (iSMART) of clinical signs was developed in a user-centered manner for improving manpower effi cacy and the quality of medicare. This paper presents the construct and application effi ciency of iSMART. Methods: A physiologic value transfer system was used to connect medical and nursing information systems. Information technologies were incorporated to reduce the manual operations in bedside measurement, determination, transmission, disposal, and recording of alerts. The reduction in coding time, manpower costs, and typing errors before and after the introduction of iSMART was used to assess system effi ciency. Results: All assessments indicated that the system is helpful in improving manpower effi cacy and the quality of medicare. Both senior and junior nurses can become familiar with the system quickly and sense a reduction in work stress with the support of user-friendly system functions. Conclusion: A number of information systems are developed yearly for use in clinical practice by various clinical professionals. Users must adapt to changes in a busy work environment. This paper expresses a way of achieving maximum efficiency with the least amount of change. The modular design of iSMART makes it suitable for wide application. Therefore, our experience could be useful for other hospitals to gradually improve their medical information systems based on existing systems. |
