How to develop and implement character education is a very important issue to Taiwan. The current policy relies more on schooling and less on family and society to cultivate character education. This paper is objecting to such view, arguing for more consideration from social, cultural contexts and parents’ views. I take the British character education with the “Jubilee Center for Character and Values” of the University of Birmingham as the object of this study. The Center has promoted character education by seriously taking the views of parents, students, teachers and culture. Drawn from this study, four implications are suggested for the future policies and researches of character and moral education in Taiwan: (1) policies on character education should focus on the wellbeing of children, (2) the need of research centers on the practical execution of character teaching, (3) more emphasis on Chinese culture in character education, and (4) the need of research in children as subject. |
