The purpose of this study was to explore the curriculum designing for college students of who majored in children English learning and teaching in departments of applied foreign languages/English (DAFL/DAE) at science and technology universities. The researcher collected the course lists from 66 DAFLs/DAEs with training courses for pre-service children's English teachers. The frequency and the total hours of each course were analyzed. The findings indicated that more than 87% of science and technology universities in Taiwan established DAFL/DAE. Among the DAFLs/DAEs, more than 85% of them created a module of children English learning and teaching. Five courses were common for pre-service children's English teachers training, namely English Teaching Methods and Materials, Computer-Assisted English Teaching, Introduction to Linguistics, Teachings in Children's Literature and Second Language Acquisition. The researcher suggested a balanced curriculum for children's English teacher training include Educational Psychology, English Classroom Management, Introduction to Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Introduction to English as Foreign Language, Teachings in Children's Literature, Materials and Methods for Teaching Children English as a Foreign Language, English Teaching Methods and Materials, English Curriculum Design, Teaching Phonics, Computer-Assisted English Teaching and English Teaching Practicum. |
