The past decade witnessed a rapid growth in the Information Systems research community in Taiwan. However, there is a lack of analysis to understand the research focuses, directions and trends. In Taiwan, a research thesis must be submitted in partial fulfillment for the award of a Master degree. Normally, a Master thesis of any student is heavily influenced by his/her advisor(s). As a result, by analyzing the topics and research methodologies used in IS theses, one can arrive at a general understanding of the current status of IS research, as well as the major research issues and methods used by each IS research program (Graduate department in information management). In this study, content analysis is employed to analyze (1) theses produced by graduate departments in information management, and (2) IS related theses produced by graduate departments in business administration. Result reveals that current IS research is diverse;however, studies are more technically oriented and non-empirical in nature. Each IS research program tends to focus on different issues and prefer different research methodologies. More recently established programs tend to keep a balanced profile among technical, managerial and application orientations. However, despite a continuing growth in number, empirical studies are lacking in proportion. |
