Global warming has raised concern worldwide. Education is an effective approach to solving environmental problems. What kind of educational strategies does Taiwan have to face this major issue? This research aims to explore the type of actions that college students take to reduceglobal warming, their status of cognition and affective variables, and essential factors that influence college students to take action against global warming. A survey was conducted on college students from around Taiwan, and 599 questionnaires were valid. The results show that college students are not proactive on taking action to reduce global warming. They are especially lacking in political action, legal action, and show a moderate to weak affective variable. Furthermore, environmental sensitivity, self-efficacy, knowledge of environmental action strategies, involvement, and knowledge of global warming are important factors in predicting environmental action, but the effect of having knowledge of global warming has a negative correlation. Knowledge of environmental action strategies is an important influential factor on environmental action. Not only does it affect environmental action directly, but also indirectly through environmental sensitivity and self-efficacy. Based on these results, this research proposes recommendations for environmental education strategies in Taiwan and suggestions for future research. |
