In recent ten years or so, with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Association for General Education and each university in Taiwan, general education at the universities and colleges has made discernible progress in providing students with better knowledge. Gazing into the future, the question of how to transform knowledge into wisdom so that it will facilitate improving students' life should be the focus of college general education efforts. This paper represents my ongoing reflections on this issue in recent years. This paper concludes that teaching is not just a profession, it is a mission. The teacher must always embrace a sense of gratitude while in engaging in teaching and research work. Toward the senior faculty, toward the school, toward the students, especially toward the students, the teacher should embrace a sense of gratitude. Because our students, at the age of 18-22, are in the bloom of their youth, in their flowering spring when they enter our classroom, we must devote ourselves to giving them each a pair of hand-sewn spiritual shoes which they can wear after graduation when they encounter the brambles and hardships along the road of their future life. This is where the deepest importance of our education lies. If we teachers always embrace our sense of gratitude while pursuing our teaching career, we will be able to participate in the students’ maturation in life as well as in knowledge. |
