Music is the art of sound. If one wants to have deep understanding of music, he must possess acute sense of a hearing and certain degree of music knowledge such as history and theory. Non-music major students don't have sufficient capability for the above mentioned. Enriching the intelligence of music and expanding the scope and profundity of listening are the targets that teachers need to strive for. The music appreciation course, Music and Life, tries to construct the curriculum from different thoughts: taking ”life” as the core of planning teaching materials, assignment and discussion and encouraging students to think creatively and actively. There are four aspects to interpret the meaning of life: accumulation of time, innovation and attempt, changing of emotion and observation and concern of our surroundings. Taiwanese folksongs, the movement of campus folksongs, classical music, jazz, world music and new age are chosen for the teaching materials. The association of students' life experience is taken into account in their assignment. In addition to urging students to use what they have learned in the class, these assignments invite them to think about their environment and times. By the group discussion, students can introspect their own life experience stimulated by music. Discussion coordinated by teaching assistants leads students to explore themselves. Teaching methods, like audition, audio-visual correspondence and class discussion, boost students' musical sensitivity. Through the appreciation of different musical genres and styles and the discussion of various topics of life, students are expected to learn to treat the life from different aspects and cultivate the breadth of mind and the human nature of seeking beauty. |
