The purpose of this project is to improve nursing overtime. Nurses working overtime for 1 to 2 hours is a common phenomenon. Overtime expenditures will lead to a mental and physical burden, decrease in satisfaction, and high turnover of new employees. This article intends to address the reasons behind overtime. The reasons are numerous: novice nurses, big changes of patients, severity of illness, improper nursing staff rates during rush hours, delayed times in handover of duty, and shortage of equipment. After the intervention of the ad hoc group, the group revised the job specification, added “flexible distribution of human resources during rush hours”, implemented the specification in handover of duty, and increased equipment. After the implementation of this project, the average nursing overtime decreased from 137 minutes to 77 minutes. The improvement rate was 43.7% and the rate of goal attainment was 105%. The project’s purpose was achieved. Although the goal was achieved, the comprehensive improvement of nursing overtime was still not achieved. Through this project, it is hoped that a feasible solution will be exercised during extreme nursing staff shortage, the working environment will continuously be improved, and finally, the overwork problem will be solved to increase satisfaction on work environment and patient care quality. |
