The main purpose of this study is to understand and analyze the current higher education situation about faculty recruitment and employment relationship in Taiwan, including practices, challenges, and solutions to the problems. The study adopts literature review. Conforming to laws such as University Act, Teachers’ Act, and Act of Governing the Appointment of Educators, the procedure of faculty recruitment must undergo three levels of academic review process, including departmental reviewing committees, school reviewing committees, and college/university reviewing committees. In order to recruit adequate faculty members that could assist with developments of departments, colleges, and universities, ways often utilized to examine candidates’ capabilities primary include publications review, trial teaching, and interview. Challenges in the current practices of faculty recruitment include: no adequate training in teaching for some college instructors and the mythology that tenure-track professors are life-long employed. This study ultimately draws conclusions and proposes suggestions for the educational authorities, universities and future research. |
