Postmodernism is an important trend of thought on 21st Century. It influences creating, reading and researching of Children's Literature and Picture Books. To comprehend the Postmodern features in Taiwanese Picture Books, this paper researches into two works of Picture Books by Taiwanese creator Shih-Liu An. The two works are A Wednesday Afternoon, Chasing Tadpoles (2004) and At Sixes and Sevens (2010). Both of them won the Children's Literature Award of Hsin-yi Foundation, and the jury pointed out that these two works display the Postmodern art. This paper generalizes the features of Postmodern Picture Books which pointed out by experts of nowadays to six points: 1. Indeterminacy, 2.Multiple and Intermixed, 3.Excess, 4. Parody, 5. Metafictive, 6. Reader Participation. And along these six dimensions, this paper analyzes the Postmodern features in Shih-Liu An's two works of Picture Books, and the art of expression. The results of this study show that the word and picture texts of Shih-Liu An's two works display all of these six Postmodern features by multiple art of expression. Therefore, this paper believes that Shih-Liu An is deeply influenced by the trend of Postmodernism. Besides, among these six features, the more obvious are " Multiple and Intermixed" and " Excess" , and they point out the joyous and ebullient motif of Shih-Liu An's two works. |
