Previous research has shown that the 15-item Dispositional Resilience Scale (DRS-15) is a reliable and valid self-report tool to measure hardiness. However, the Chinese version of DRS-15 did not display acceptable reliability and validity for the Chinese group. The purpose of this study was to develop the Dispositional Stress-resistance Scale (DSS) and evaluate its psychometric properties. First, the DRS-15 was translated to Chinese version and the other 8 items based on definitions of Hardiness were added to create the 23-item item pool. The item pool was administered to 309 college students, and 15 best items were selected by item analysis to form the DSS. The results showed that DSS has good psychometric properties: 1. Adequate and stable internal consistencies, 2. Acceptable model fit, 3. Relations and directions with the other scales (BDI, BAI, PSS, Psychophysical symptoms, Chinese Multidimensional Trait Self-esteem) were consistent with theory and previous literature. The Dispositional Stress-resistance Scale is expected to be an acceptable and efficient tool to assess hardiness in the Chinese group. |
