This study examines the implementation of life education in the curriculum guidelines of 12-year basic education by analyzing some junior high schools in Taoyuan city as examples.
First, this study explores major issues about promoting life education in the curriculum guidelines of the 12-year basic education. On that basis, it will analyze nine winning works in “Life Education Teaching Method and Executive Plan Contest of the 107 Academic Year.” Further, with the help of some teachers’ perspectives and arranged interviews, this study wants to show the facts and difficulties of promoting life education in junior high schools in Taoyuan.
Life education, which is relied on the 12-year basic education, still faces many challenges. As the analysis shows, since it is delivered via a single manual and by teachers with individual capacities, it may lead to a lack of unity in teaching methods and unawareness about the students’ learning strategies. In that sense, the implementation is meant to struggle with the binary opposition between knowledge and technique, the difficulties related to evaluation and execution, the teachers’ incapacity and even their own personal attitudes and values toward this issue.
To make a breakthrough in the future, this study believes in the importance to reshape the school culture with life education itself. If the schools include the literacy education from the international trend and keep expanding the themes of life education in the teaching scene, the implementation of life education will soon make a great progress.
