During the early 20th century, strong nationalistic ideas sprung up in Indonesia. The Chinese elites were split into three groups: siding with the Dutch governing, supporting the independent nationalism, or promoting the Chinese nationalism. There is little research exploring the potential barrier of cooperation between the Chinese and the natives. We argue that the gap of timing (between the Chinese nationalism and local nationalism) and the gap of economic status (between the Chinese and the natives) are two main factors hindering the potential cooperation between the Chinese and the natives even both support the independent nationalism. |
