“Chiu Jih Lan Tien Tsui Shih Chuang” and “Deng Gao” are twoseven-character octaves of Du Fu based on mountain climbing andsentiment expression in Chongyang Festival. Two poems were praised as“masterpieces of seven-character octaves” in ancient time. In selection ofTang poetry in Ming and Qing Dynasties, they tended to be selected. However, in selection of Tang poetry edited by modern people, “Deng Gao”is still regarded as “masterpiece”. “Chiu Jih Lan Tien Tsui Shih Chuang”is considered “outdated” and it is selected only in few publications. On thecontrary, “Chiu Jih Lan Tien Tsui Shih Chuang” is rarely commented andstudied and it lacks the profound discussion which compares the poem with“Deng Gao” upon similar subject. This study intends to first probe into commentaries and selection ontwo poems in 21 selections of Tang poetry in Ming and Qing Dynasties andmodern time. By “best selection” characteristic of mostly 300 poemsselected in modern selection of Tang poetry and “popular” poetry selectionfor the concern of modern readers’ reading demand, this study reviews theevolution and poetic implication of two masterpieces of seven-characteroctaves of Du Fu. |
