Objectives: To improve the relationship between our psychiatric hospital and adjacent communities, we haved employed a green care program since 2016. Herein, the program is described, and the outcome is assessed. Methods: An action research design was employed, and three major periods were established. In the initial stage, we employed ecological resources in our psychiatric hospital in collaboration with the Hsi Liu Environmental Greening Foundation to generate a closer relationship with local communities. In the construction stage, we created a therapeutic forest garden in the hospital in cooperation with the Hsi Liu Foundation. Residents in adjacent communities were invited to cultivate plants in the garden. In the growth stage, we introduced a farming course in partnership with a community college. Results: 1. In total, 23 residents participated in this program for more than 3 years. Their average age was 67.52 years. ten of them rated the program positively. This result indicated that the participants enjoyed the ecological farming. 2. Three community residents became hospital volunteers. 3. Ten participants appeared in television program interviews to discuss their ecological farming. 4. The therapeutic garden was awarded a prize at the Taipei Garden City construction achievement competition in 2019. Conclusion: The green care program has broken the boundary of the psychiatric hospital and connected it with adjacent communities. |
