Since national defense education was incorporated into the 108 Curriculum Guidelines, the Ministry of Education has released supplementary textbooks for elementary and middle school students. Various sectors have also utilized different media and materials to enhance the depth and breadth of national defense awareness. This paper analyzes Sweet Potato Village Mobilization (published by the Ministry of Education in 2020) and Children's First Picture Book for Understanding Soldiers: Heroes of the Sea and Air Guarding Taiwan's Territory (published by Muma Culture in 2023), comparing their narrative styles and content formats. The results showed that Sweet Potato Village Mobilization primarily targets preschool children, features anthropomorphic animal characters, and is based on animal fairy tales, reflecting current events and the importance of defending the nation and preventing the pandemic. Children's First Picture Book about Soldiers: Heroes of the Sea and Air Guarding Taiwan's Territory primarily targets children aged 6 to 12, with characters modeled after real soldiers and incorporating family elements. The story, written in a realistic literary style, guides children to understand the duties of soldiers and the concepts of territorial waters and airspace, fostering a deeper understanding of soldiers who defend the country. Both books have online electronic resources available. Sweet Potato Village Mobilization also includes interactive multimedia games and audiobooks, helping children improve their learning performance; Children's First Picture Book about Soldiers: Heroes of the Sea and Air Guarding Taiwan's Territory also has character education implications. Both books enhance the depth and breadth of national defense education for all citizens. |
