Members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Shaanxi province were closely connected with the military before the Second Sino-Japanese War. Some party members received military training, while others served in Shaanxi’s local armed forces. Certain individuals voluntarily joined the army, rather than being directly dispatched by the CCP. When the CCP instructed its members within the army to launch mutinies, they did not always comply, as they believed the conditions were not yet favorable. Even after a mutiny eventually occurred, CCP members in the army still disagreed with the delegate representing the Party leadership. Due to the lack of long-term planning, the rebellious forces wandered aimlessly and were ultimately annihilated. This article examines the characteristics of the CCP’s activities and mutinies within the Nationalist army by analyzing several CCP-related uprisings in Shaanxi’s local military between 1921 and 1934. |
