For the past decade, it has seen increasing international competition and the demands for educating global citizens. In response to such wider context, Taiwan has promoted international education since 2009, launching new concepts and measures in teacher education accordingly. In 2012, the White Paper on Teacher Education also proposed the new scheme on internationalization of teacher education. By interviewing the heads of teacher education programs at the selected universities, this study aims to explore the notions, teacher competence, curriculum and learning activities, policies, and challenges at the university level. Despite the wide support of internationalization of teacher education from the university, there are still doubts about the core value and direction. A wide range of challenges and difficulties requiring systematic support. The conclusions point out three major directions for improvement: enhancement of intercultural competencies among teacher students; inclusion of formal curriculum for international literature; and effective institutional upholding. |
