Dreams and myths are both significant expressions of the human psyche. In Fish Dream Fish: A-Liao’s Fish Stories, Liao Hung-Chi (1957–) blends symbolic language, fiction, and storytelling, using metamorphic and fantastical dream imagery to craft a collection of short stories reminiscent of myths and fables. This paper explores how Fish Dream Fish interweaves dreams and writing to form metaphors for self-expression and communication with the external world. The discussion begins by examining how the collection extends themes from Liao’s earlier works and investigates the use of dream imagery as a narrative path to writing. It then delves into the representations of“the fish’s dreams”and“the dream’s fish”within the stories, analyzing their relationship to the author’s creative consciousness and thematic concerns. The analysis further uncovers the ambiguous, elusive, and layered meanings embedded in the text. Based on these findings, this paper argues that the symbolic figures in Fish Dream Fish, imbued with life and emotion, reflect diverse aspects of existence and envision oceanic futures through the imaginative freedom of fantasy. These metaphors echo a fundamental quest for life and critique the relentless pursuit of modernity. Finally, the paper notes that Liao’s writing invites readers to emotionally reconnect with nature through a dreamlike narrative lens. |
