In the area of child maltreatment, it is observed that, in comparison to child abuse, cases of child neglect demonstrate characteristics such as being‘not clear’,‘it doesn’t matter’, and‘difficult to prove’. This study focuses on how pediatricians in Taiwan deal with the issues of child neglect as professionals in children's medical treatment. The research adopts the focus group method, collecting opinions and ideas from eight pediatricians who work in child protection medical services in Taiwan. It reveals certain features of child neglect in medical settings and the challenges of identifying and providing treatment. Mandatory reporting is a fundamental task for the medical team. However, some of the pediatricians can offer further services when working with case managers or social workers. It is also shown that some pediatricians are not only equipped to identify neglected cases but also act as coordinators in the team, demonstrating the growing importance of networking in the child protection system. It is suggested that in future child protection system in Taiwan, further collaboration with other professionals is expected, and resources for prevention and advocacy for child neglect are required. |
