Virtual tourism refers to the application of cutting-edge technologies in tourism to encourage individuals to experience the world from the comfort of their homes. As societies adapted to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 lockdowns, virtual tourism has emerged as a significant innovation in health promotion. It not only provides immersive experiences that disseminate health knowledge, but also integrates various concepts and factors to support both health governance and technical practices in the tourism industry. In this context, this work primarily evaluates the extent to which virtual tourism has been utilized for health promotion in the post-pandemic era through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An initial search on Scopus yielded 847 articles, of which only 33 were deemed relevant to the primary research objectives after thorough analysis. This study categorizes the applications of virtual tourism into three areas: (i) personal health promotion, (ii) global health governance, and (iii) technological innovation. Based on these findings, this research contributes to the development of a comprehensive framework that positions virtual tourism as a multidisciplinary tool for improving health outcomes at both individual and community levels. The paper concludes with a discussion of theoretical and practical implications, providing insights into the future potential of virtual tourism in the field of health promotion for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. |
