This study investigated the application of professional competencies by social work supervisors. It involved collecting respondents based on the practical work perspectives of social welfare service practitioners. We examined respondents' awareness of their competencies, learning sources, and their evaluation of the importance, application, and proficiency of these competencies. Additionally, this study aimed to uncover the gap between social work supervisors' professional competencies and what is expected by the profession. After reviewing literature and theories, this study identified eight key competencies in social work supervision. Then, we conducted a survey with 205 full-time social work supervisors in Taiwan. The results indicate that supervisors primarily link two competencies with ''aligning knowledge and action'' and rely heavily on practical experience as their learning source rather than formal education or training in school. The findings also indicate a noticeable lack of ''administrative function'' among the participants. Furthermore, this study further detected variations in competence awareness, usage, and proficiency due to personal and organizational differences. Based on these findings, we put forward recommendations to enhance the professional competencies in supervisory roles. |
