This paper aims to explore the transformation of Xiu Tao’s poetic style. In the 1960s, Xiu Tao gained fame with his poem“White Dash,”hailed by Shang Qin as a pioneer of the“shocking”theory in prose poetry. Liu Da-ren even described Xiu Tao as an“angry youth of the 1960s.”However, Xiu Tao stopped writing for about 20 years, starting in 1965. Upon returning to the literary scene, Xiu Tao’s poetic style underwent a significant change, no longer expressing the anger and melancholy of his early works but deliberately pursuing a plain style. Despite scholars mainly focusing on his later prose poems, this paper, through examining historical materials, first argues that Xiu Tao’s early lineated poems are not inferior in artistic achievement to his later prose poems and then further compares related historical materials to reveal various shifts in Xiu Tao’s poetic thoughts. Through a comparative analysis of his poems, this paper seeks to trace the trajectory of Xiu Tao’s creative transformation and explore the turning points in his poetic and life journey. |
